Once upon a time, before the rise of the electric guitar, back in the dim dark past. Steps to the Real Book helps to foster both approaches. ©1992-2004 James D.Levy. The 'Tune' part of your practicing has you dealing with a melody and chord progression - both of which are subject to interpretation and change. Typically you.

The first thing I did was learn the melody and chords for the song. I found Misty interesting, because I encountered 1/4 note triplets. It's always interesting for me to practice 1/4 note triplets. I used the sheet music as a guide, and listened to other recordings of the song to get a feel for the music. I can't sight read like a legend yet, but, I was not pressured to sight read for this one, and had enough time to sit with the score and work through the sheet.

Here is a music score for the song. http://www.swiss-jazz.ch/standards-jazz/Misty.pdf
Once I had the chords and melody down independently, the next step was try to put it together. As a general rule, the Melody will be the notes of chord...otherwize, it will be a note of the scale. Or, the note will be a chromatic passing tone.
Now, the challenge is to play the melody and the chord at the same time, with the melody on the high note of the chord. Sometimes, the usual chords shapes I play didn't work, so I needed to find a new chord voicing...this was the biggest learning curve. I found 3 - 4 different ways of playing a minor 7, or a minor 7 flat 5.
I hope this encourages you to make your own solo arrangements!
Happy playing folks!
